My name is Zach Doehler and I am a 24-year-old professional photographer based out of Beautiful British Columbia, Canada. I've been in love with photography since I was 15 and it all started with an insatiable curiosity about the universe.
In my mid-teens, I really wanted to learn how to photograph the night sky. Realizing my phone wasn't up to the task, I rummaged around and found an old Canon Rebel XT collecting dust in our basement. It was a decade old and only had a kit lens, but it was more than enough for a curious teen to start learning about photography.
Fast forward a bit, and I had taught myself how to photograph the night sky. This opened a whole new world for me and soon I was trying out different genres of photography: from macro and portraiture to landscapes. With every click, my appreciation for the world around me grew. I was hooked. Photography became a way for me to appreciate and understand my surroundings better. I learned to observe how light could dramatically change a scene, turning the everyday into something extraordinary. My camera not only encouraged me to explore nature, but it also became a source of comfort during tough times.
As my journey continued, I found myself diving into post-processing. Using Adobe Lightroom, I began experimenting with different styles and color palettes. This allowed me to add a unique touch to my work and helped me grow as an artist. After countless hours in front of the computer screen, I was able to develop a style that spoke true to me, focusing on the interaction of light and vivid colors.
In 2019, I made a decision that would change my life. I quit my day job as a plumbing apprentice to pursue landscape photography full-time. It was scary at first, but looking back, it's one of the best decisions I've ever made. The freedom to focus on what I love has been nothing short of a dream. Today, I love sharing what I've learned with others. I've created courses detailing how I process my images and every day I do my best to answer as many questions as I can from fellow photographers reaching out to me on Instagram.
If you're thinking of picking up photography, here's my two cents: Start simple. You don't need a fancy camera. Use your phone, go outside, and pay attention to the world around you. Experiment with capturing and editing images. And most importantly, have fun with it. After all, that's how my journey began.
